1911 – 2014
Norway — Ellen W. Tubbs, 103, of Norway, died on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Norway Center for Health and Rehabilitation.
Ellen was born at home on July 26, 1911, the daughter of James N. Tubbs and Blanche E. (Groves) Tubbs of Norway.
Ellen attended the primary school on Tucker Street and Norway Elementary School (presently Guy E. Rowe school) walking to both schools from the family’s Main Street home. She remembered going home for lunch and returning for afternoon classes. She went to North Yarmouth Academy for high school, living on campus. She graduated in 1929, and then went to the Portland Art School for two years, obtaining a teaching certificate. She remembered how proud her mother was of her. During the war, she spent three years in the office of Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Conn. She then returned to the family home in Norway to care for her parents, run her own gift shop and work in retail sales at Crane’s Main Street Store.
Ellen joined the Second Congregational Church in 1933. She had the distinction of being the oldest member. She was also a member of the Women’s Fellowship and the knitting group. She knit many lovely sweaters to send to Maine Seacoast Mission. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, being a past matron.
She loved to travel. A topic of conversation was the world map on the wall with strings showing all the places where Ellen and her sister had traveled. Ellen fondly remembered the home on Main Street where she grew up with her younger sister. She sold knickknacks and trinkets from her own shop in the woodshed.
She enjoyed sharing her memories with all who would listen. While residing at Norway Center for Health and Rehabilitation she was active and involved in resident activities. She led a gracious, generous and humorous life.
She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Irene Tubbs.
