LEWISTON – Elwin J. Sherman Sr., 66, of the West Road, Litchfield, died Saturday evening, May 27, at Central Maine Medical Center with family at his side.

He was born Aug. 25, 1939, in Charleston, R.I., a son of Elwin A. and Reva (Carr) Sherman.

He was educated in Rhode Island schools, spent many years living and working in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and relocated to this area in 1993.

On Aug. 19, 1995, he married Neota J. White in Lisbon.

Elwin was a mechanic by trade. He worked as an auto mechanic for car dealerships for a number of years, and also had extensive experience working on trucks and other heavy equipment.

While living in this community, he worked for Ricker Hill Orchards for a number of years, maintaining their equipment until ill health forced his retirement.

In his earlier years, he also worked at fish houses in ports of Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Among his favorite enjoyments in his free time were tinkering with tractors and anything else with an engine, talking about cars, going fishing, hunting, going to yard sales and enjoying the natural beauty of nature and wildlife.

He also enjoyed auto racing. In his early years, as a racer himself, he had the opportunity to meet Dale Earnhardt when Dale was just starting out in the profession.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Neota Sherman of Litchfield; two daughters, Justina Brewer and husband, Kirt, of Missouri, and Ruth Vocatura and husband, Don, of Rhode Island; four sons, Gibert Sherman and wife, Mary Ann, of Nebraska, Elwin J. Sherman Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Connecticut, Stewart Sherman and wife, Norma, of Connecticut, and Peter Sherman of Connecticut; two step-sons, George Huntington and wife, Sandy, of Durham, and Scott Huntington and wife, Stacy, of West Gardiner; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Judith Woodmancee-Sullivan and husband, Terry, of Rhode Island, and Evelyn Monk and husband, Jim, of Rhode Island.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and Jack Sherman; three sisters, Ruth Baker, Gloria Carr and Reva Woodmancee; and a step-daughter, Lois Snow.
