1938 – 2014
LISBON FALLS — Elwyn E. Hutchins, 75, of Lisbon Falls, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Feb. 21, at his home, with his family by his side.
He was born in Kingfield, on Sept. 19, 1938, a son of the late Elwin and Helen (Crocker) Hutchins. He grew up in the area and attended local schools there. He was a graduate of Central High School in New Portland, Class of 1957. He also received his associate degree in automotive at Southern Maine Vocational College where he graduated in 1959.
On Aug. 26, 1961, he married Elizabeth Williams at Holy Family Church in Lisbon Falls. Shortly after they were married, Elwyn was drafted and entered the United States Army in December 1961. He proudly served his country until his discharge in 1963. Elwyn worked for over 35 years at Bath Iron Works until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Slovak Catholic Association in Lisbon Falls and the American Legion in Lisbon Falls. He was also a member of the Lisbon Fire Department for 17 years and the Pejepscot Sno-Chiefs.
He loved fishing, hunting and camping. He was always known for doing more for others than he did for himself. He was very helpful, handy and good at fixing small machines, such as lawn mowers for friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Hutchins of Lisbon Falls; his two children, Eric Hutchins and his wife, Madeleine, of Lisbon Falls and Elise Chard and her husband, Thomas, of Old Orchard Beach. He also leaves behind a sister, Allison Franklin of Carrollton, Texas; as well as four grandchildren, Benjamin and Amanda Hutchins and Elissa and Emilie Chard.
He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire staff of the I.C.U. department at St. Mary’s Regional Hospital and the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice for their devoted and compassionate care towards Elwyn in his final weeks.
