Environmental groups sue Maine over incidental lynx deaths by trappers

PORTLAND (AP) — An environmental coalition is filing a lawsuit challenging the federal government’s authorization of incidental killing of Canada lynx by Maine fur trappers.

Lynx are protected, so states cannot allow incidental harm to the cats without a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Three environmental groups say the service shouldn’t have issued such a permit to Maine last year.

The groups say the Endangered Species Act makes clear that harm to lynx must be “minimized and mitigated.” They say the service is refusing to require a few “common sense changes” that would protect Maine lynx.

The groups are the Central for Biological Diversity, Animal Welfare Institute and Wildlife Alliance of Maine.

Maine officials declined comment. The Fish and Wildlife Service didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
