Expert: Cape Elizabeth gun range unable to stop stray bullets

CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) — A gun safety expert says a Maine gun range is not able to adequately keep stray bullets from leaving the property.

The police chief in Cape Elizabeth last month ordered the Spurwink Rod & Gun Club to suspend shooting at its outdoor range in the wake of expert Rick LaRosa’s findings that the facility is unsafe.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1J1iKXb ) reported LaRosa is concluding that the shooting range also has no way to keep nonmembers from entering the club.

LaRosa says the club needs to make safety improvements. Those improvements could cost up to $1 million. The club’s representatives say they are optimistic they can raise the money and reopen in six months.

The town council is holding a public hearing Sept. 14 on the club’s application to operate.
