F. Berkley Hobart


1919 – 2014

WINTHROP — F. Berkley Hobart, 94, a resident of Barrel Shop Road in Greene, died on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center in Winthrop.

He was born in Greene on Nov. 23, 1919, the son of Frederick B. and Sarah Jillson Hobart. He attended Patten School in Greene and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1937, receiving an honorable mention. On Jan. 1, 1941, he married Dorothy E. Newcomb in Lewiston; she passed away on Nov. 13, 1998. He worked in farming with his father for 25 years and for the Department of Transportation doing year-round highway maintenance for 11½ years, retiring in 1981.

He belonged to the Monmouth Masonic Lodge No. 110 AF & AM; he was a member for 61 years. He was also a member of the Kora Shrine in Lewiston and the Kora Shrine Chanters, as well as a member and past master of the Androscoggin-Pomona Grange, the unofficial “historian” for the town of Greene and a member of the Universalist Church of Greene.

He is survived by his daughter, Jane Wheeler and her husband, Allen, of Leeds; two grandchildren, Paul Frederick Wheeler and his wife, Pat, of Greene and Thomas Allen Wheeler and his wife, Jess, of Lincoln; four great-grandchildren, Christina, Josh, Nathan and Lyndsay Wheeler; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Janelle Barry and Kaley Willette; sister-in-law, Verna Hobart; niece, Audrey Savoie; and grand-nephew, Steven Savoie.

He was predeceased by his companion, Marion; brother, Richard Wheeler Hobart; niece, Susan Hobart; and sister-in-law, Milicent Hobart.
