AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine woman convicted in February of kidnapping two of her children and driving them to South Carolina has asked to leave the state to engage in a custody battle.

The Kennebec Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1h98KkK ) 36-year-old BethMarie Retamozzo, of Fairfield, asked a judge in Augusta Thursday to travel from Maine to Florida to fight an effort by officials in the state to terminate her right to her third child.

Retamozzo’s attorney says a Florida caseworker requested a face-to-face meeting as part of the process.

Prosecutors said Retamozzo abducted her then 7-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son in Augusta in 2013.

Three days after they disappeared, she and the children were found in South Carolina, en route to Florida.

Prosecutors say they are “extremely uncomfortable” with letting her leave the state.
