AUBURN — Falcon Performance Footwear is the recipient of the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership’s 2011 Manufacturing Excellence Award. The honor was presented to company officials recently by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
The award is bestowed each year to a Maine company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision and manufacturing excellence. Collins praised the company for its ability to develop innovative products and successfully utilize the resources available through Maine’s economic development agencies and the University of Maine.
“The Falcon Performance Footwear story illustrates the challenges facing manufacturers in our nation and our state. Its success demonstrates the ingenuity, energy and determination that enable our manufacturers to meet those challenges,” Collins said.
Since 2001, Falcon has worked with the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership to improve its production efficiency, workforce training, plant layout and strategic planning. Last year, when the firm decided to relocate its facility from Lewiston to Auburn, Falcon called upon Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership to assist it with the new plant layout. That eventually led to a dramatic breakthrough in the company’s production process allowing the company to lower inventory costs, improve throughput and seek growth opportunities.
Falcon’s success working with programs such as the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership has allowed it to continually develop innovative products, such as their composite toe caps for its industrial, mining and firefighting boots.
Founded in Lewiston in 1963, Falcon Footwear has also made work boots and traditional footwear for companies such as L.L. Bean, Dunham, Timberland and Cabela’s.
