RUMFORD – The Family Dollar Store will move to neighboring Mexico in June.
Chantal Hickey, manager of the variety store for the past four years, said on Monday that plans call for moving a mainstay of the Congress Street retail district in mid- to late June.
A reopening in the Mexico Plaza at the former site of Food City will likely be in early July.
The retailer has been located on Congress Street ever since the North Carolina-based chain moved into the area six years ago.
Hickey said the primary reason for the move is larger space, allowing for more items, particularly those geared toward seasonal promotional goods, she said. There’s also more parking and a loading dock, she said.
The store employs four people. Additional employees will likely be added at the new site, said Hickey, but she doesn’t know how many yet.
The Food City grocery store closed last year.
Wardo’s Bargain Store, adjacent to the future site of the Family Dollar store in the Mexico Plaza, plans to close by the end of the week
