Fires in Quebec send smoke over Maine

Emergency officials confirmed Sunday that forest fires still burning in Quebec province are sending smoke and smell to as far away as Maine, with no indication of when the fires will be under control.

Officials said wind patterns would continue to send smoke toward northern New England until Monday, when a change in wind patterns is predicted. Scores of fires were reportedly burning in Quebec province, due in part to dry conditions, with some as close at 350 miles from Portland.

In areas reached by the smoke, authorities suggested people limit their activities outdoors, particularly people with respiratory conditions.
