Fireworks over fireworks

LEWISTON – A woman suffered minor injuries Wednesday during a street brawl over illegal fireworks set off on a city street, police said.

The woman, who was in her late teens or early twenties, was not identified. She was beaten and possibly kicked during the skirmish, police said. She wasn’t transported to a hospital.

She was among a crowd of roughly 75 people who scuffled in front of 131 Horton St. shortly before 9:30 p.m. and shortly after a Twin Cities fireworks display at Great Falls.

Some people had been setting off illegal fireworks, which touched off an altercation amid the angry crowd, said Police Lt. James Minkowsky.

Officers who had been returning to the station from crowd control duties at Great Falls were redirected to Horton Street, dispersing the crowd before the fight had a chance to escalate further, Minkowsky said.

Police confiscated illegal fireworks. The person or people who assaulted the woman were not immediately found, Minkowsky said.
