AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul R. LePage has ordered that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Sunday, Jan. 13, in Farmington in honor of Lt. Col. Michael Backus.
This is in addition to his order that the flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at all Maine National Guard facilities.
Backus, 44, was a Maine Army National Guard Active Guard and Reserve officer serving with the Joint Forces Headquarters. He died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 7, while performing his duties at Camp Keyes in Augusta.
Public visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Wiles Funeral Home, 136 High St. in Wilton. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at the University of Maine, Farmington in the South Dining Hall.
