'Fly Me to the Moon' gal-pal comedy with lots of laughter

LEWISTON — The Public Theatre chases away the winter blues with the hilarious gal-pal comedy, “Fly Me to the Moon,” playing Jan. 26 to Feb. 4.

Imagine I Love Lucy meets Thelma and Louise when two Irish homecare nurses attempt to get rich quick and wind up in a hilarious series of misadventures when their elderly patient is found – or isn’t found – dead.

It’s non-stop laughter as these two women wrestle with each other and their consciences when a large sum of money is presented to them by a most unfortunate accident. And so begins a comically inept attempt at bettering their lives.

“Desperate people in a desperate situation is the best recipe for a comedy,” says director Janet Mitchko. “It’s just plain fun,” quotes Mitchko, as she promises audiences satisfying belly laughs reminiscent of the comedy teams of Lucy and Ethel or Ralph Cramden and Ed Norton. “Fly Me to the Moon” is a new comedy written by Marie Jones, playwright of the successful Broadway hit, “Stones in His Pockets.”

Performing the roles of Frances Shields and Loretta Mackey are Broadway actresses Annie Edgerton and Amy Griffin. Annie has appeared on Broadway in “Mamma Mia” as well as on the National Tour of “Mamma Mia” and “Kinky Boots.” She is also on a quest to sing the National Anthem for all MLB teams and has accomplished 24/30 to date.

Amy is also a Broadway veteran, appearing in the original cast of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” She has also appeared Off Broadway in “Newsical,” “Forbidden Broadway” and in the recent revival of “Once Upon a Mattress” starring Jackie Hoffman.

Once again, The Public Theatre will continue its free pre-show events on opening night with a pre-show beer tasting compliments of Baxter Brewing, and a pre-show wine-tasting in the lobby provided by Rails before the Thursday, Feb. 1, performance.

“Fly Me to the Moon” is playing at The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn’s Professional Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 26 to  Feb. 4, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, with an added Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. Feb. 3.

Tickets are $20, adults; $17, groups; $5, 18 and under. For tickets, visit thepublictheatre.org or call 207-782-3200. The theatre is located at 31 Maple St.
