LEWISTON – In observance of National Hunger Awareness Day on Saturday, June 3, Beale Street Barbeque plans to initiate its “Everybody Has to Eat 2006” campaign against hunger.

Beale Street will join Good Shepherd Food-Bank as the major sponsor for the third annual Ride Against Hunger – a mystery ride for all motorcyclists. Bikers are invited to register ($10 suggested donation) at L-A Harley, 839 Main St., between 9 and 10:30 a.m. The mystery ride will end at Good Shepherd Food-Bank, 3121 Hotel Road, Auburn, for noon refreshments, prize drawings and presentation of collected donations. Free T-shirts will be given to the first 100 registrants.

Additionally, Beale Street has pledged 10 percent of profits from its three Maine restaurants, Bath, South Portland and Augusta, and its foods business for the entire 2006 calendar year.

The owners of Beale Street Barbeque project a total contribution between $10,000 and $15,000. On June 3 during the Ride Against Hunger event Beale Street Barbeque will present a check for $10,000 to Good Shepherd Food-Bank as the first installment toward that goal.

Michael Quigg, president of the Beale Street Grill Inc., owners of Beale Street Barbeque, said, “With all of the worthy charities out there we thought it made sense for restaurants to support an organization who feeds hungry people; it is a great way for our businesses and our guests to give back to those who can’t afford to eat. Good Shepherd Food-Bank will turn our $10,000 into more than $120,000 worth of food for hungry people in Maine. Being part of that is like being part of a miracle.”
