Former New Sharon clerk indicted on theft charge

NEW SHARON – Former Town Clerk Ellen Grant has been indicted on a felony charge of theft. Police allege she stole more than $4,000 from the town between Jan. 1, 2002 and March 5, 2005.

Grant, of New Sharon, served the town for 12 years as town clerk and tax collector. She didn’t seek re-election in March 2005.

During the 2002-2003 annual audit some problems were discovered and eventually the matter was turned over to the Franklin County District Attorney Office, Franklin County Sheriff Detective Tom White said Tuesday. A forensic audit of the town’s financial books was done, White said.

Assistant District Attorney Jim Andrews said Tuesday that there was approximately $4,000 unaccounted for at the time she stopped being town clerk and tax collector.

A phone message left at Grant’s home was not immediately returned Tuesday.
