BETHEL – The former treasurer of the Bethel Rotary Club was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with stealing about $62,000 from the club, police Chief Alan Carr said.
Carr arrested William C. Alford, 48, at his Forest Drive home in Bethel.
Alford was taken to the Oxford County Jail.
He was charged with one count of theft and posted $1,000 cash bail, according to a jail officer.
Alford, who has been employed by American Skiing Co. in Newry for 12 years, joined the Rotary Club four years ago as treasurer, Carr said. He said the embezzlement of funds began in 2002 and continued until recently.
Financial irregularities were noticed by the club’s leaders, who then contacted police on April 11.
Police conducted an audit of the Rotary Club to gather evidence leading to Alford’s arrest.
Carr said the case remains under investigation and would not release any more details. A court date has been set for June 8 in Oxford County Superior Court.
