FARMINGTON — This February, Farmington residents will celebrate Valentine’s Day with traditional candlelight dinners and chocolate hearts — and a brutal improv-comedy competition.
On Saturday, Feb. 11, three western Maine improv groups will take to the Mt. Blue High School stage to square off against one another and Rhode Island’s Laughletics in “The Lovers’ Quarrel.” Only the funniest will survive, with friend pitted against friend, teacher against student, comic against comic.
Hosted and refereed by Laughletic’s Jimmy Sorrel, the event involve teams challenging one another to the sorts of improv games seen on television’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The audience will provide not only suggestions for the actors, but also the final verdict. Who wins and loses will depend on the crowd’s applause.
Battling it out will be Mt. Blue High School’s Curtain Raisers, the University of Maine at Farmington’s Lawn Chair Pirates and western Maine’s Teachers Lounge Mafia. While the groups have shared the stage before, it was always in the spirit of camaraderie, not in a battle for comedic supremacy.
They will be up against the Laughletics, seasoned improv veterans who have performed at improv festivals across New England, including the Portland Improv Festival. While cut-throat competitors, the performers’ mission will be to make people laugh.
“The Lovers’ Quarrel” is a major fundraiser for the Mt. Blue Curtain Raisers. Each spring for the past seven years, the group has attended workshops and performed at Cambridge’s ImprovBoston. Members hope to continue that tradition this year.
Gauntlets will be thrown in”The Lovers’ Quarrel” at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. in the Mt. Blue High School auditorium. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adult, $5 for students, including collegians.
