LEWISTON — Four convenience stores were robbed overnight Tuesday, one in Auburn and three in Lewiston.

Over a period of five hours, starting at 10:23 p.m., the X-press Shop Convenience Store on Center Street, Cumberland Farms on Sabattus Street, Cumberland Farms on Main Street in Lewiston and the Big Apple Store on Lisbon Street were robbed.

At 3:39 a.m. Wednesday, as police officers in Auburn and Lewiston were searching for the robbery suspect, Lewiston Police Lt. Adam Higgins saw someone fitting the suspect’s description enter the Big Apple Store in Lewiston.

He approached the storefront and peered inside, according to a press release from the Lewiston Police Department, and observed the clerk being attacked by the suspect. “The suspect had a knife in his right hand and was fighting with the clerk behind the counter.”

Higgins confronted the suspect, according to police, drawing his gun and ordering the man to drop the knife.

Rodney Morant, 39, of Lewiston was arrested, after a brief foot chase, and charged with four counts of robbery. He was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail, where he is being held.

The Lewiston Police Department will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the station to release more details.
