MEXICO – Winning posters drawn by two fourth-graders from SAD 43’s Meroby Elementary School are to be featured on front and back covers of the new town report.
At Wednesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting, Town Manager John Madigan said Andrew Boucher of Byron won first place for his depiction of a firefighting scene.
Trenton Virgin of Rumford took second place with a drawing of two youths playing basketball while a third youth skateboards in the background.
The students, who were studying Maine history at the time, were asked to draw something pertaining to the town of Mexico.
Boucher’s drawing is to be on the front cover; Virgin’s on the back.
In other business, selectmen discussed doing more to encourage residents to recycle.
They also opened two bids for a new highway department plow truck. One, from O’Connor Buick, Pontiac, GMC Inc. in Augusta for a 2007 GMC cab and chassis at $53,900; $48,920 with a trade-in. The other bid was from Morrison Motors in Mexico, for $54,695, or $51,895 with trade-in.
During the ensuing board discussion, however, selectmen were not sure if the bidding was for a truck with the same features, so, the matter was tabled to the next meeting in two weeks.
Also tabled were discussions on installing a new street light on Swett Avenue and a recommended sound system for municipal meetings.
