Frances C. Bumpus

NORWAY – Frances C. Bumpus, 93, of South Paris, died Friday at Stephens Memorial Hospital in the arms of her granddaughter, Kim.

She was born in Surry on Dec. 27, 1913, a daughter of Frank and Mary Eva Leland Carter.

She graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in the Class of 1931 and was its last living member.

She worked seasonally as an apple picker and at the bean shop. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker, as her passion was her family. She was an inspiration to family and friends.

Thanksgiving was very important to Frances and her family, as they all looked forward to the tradition of her chocolate cream pies. She was a wonderful cook. She enjoyed gardening, caring for her vegetables, flowers and her fruit trees and was well known for her strawberries.

She was a member of the reorganized church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, now known as the Community Church of Christ.

She was married to Ernest Bumpus, who died Feb. 21, 1984.

Survivors include her children, Richard and his wife, Sandra, of South Paris, Ralph of Palo Alto, Calif., Bernard and his wife, Sharon, of Oxford, Thelma and her husband, Sumner Mosher, of Madison, Gladys Mary and her husband, Sherman Knightly, of Winterport, and Stanley and his wife, Martha, of Norway; twenty-five grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; two brothers, Frank and Leland Carter; and a sister, Laura Merrill.
