Three-vehicle crash leaves one injured, dumps lumber

NEW VINEYARD — A three-vehicle accident on the New Vineyard Road Thursday morning sent one person to Franklin Memorial Hospital and left a truckload of lumber in the road.

Phyllis Dodge, 87, a passenger in a vehicle driven by Dawn Taylor, 70, both of Kingfield, was treated and released, according to a hospital representative.

A 2000 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Edward Darling, 60, of Oakland, a 1995 Dodge pickup driven by Arnold Atwood, 66, of New Vineyard and the 2002 sedan driven by Taylor were all traveling south on Route 27 near the Farmington-New Vineyard town line just before 8:30 a.m. They were all traveling slower than the posted speed limit, said investigating officer Nate Reid of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

The tractor-trailer and sedan attempted to pass the slower moving pickup driven by Atwood and a collision occurred between the two vehicles while passing, he said.

The sedan was sent into the guardrail and the tractor-trailer lost control and overturned, partially rolling onto the truck driven by Atwood and coming to rest on its side. A load of two-by-fours spilled over the roadway. Both drivers escaped without injury.

The road was reopened at about 3:30 p.m. when all the lumber had been cleared, he said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Franklin County Sheriff's Department with the help of the Maine State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Division.

Personnel from Franklin County Sheriff's Department, New Vineyard Fire Department, Farmington Fire and Rescue and NorthStar Ambulance responded to the accident, he said.
