Shoplifter takes off after cart spotted with $1,700 in goods

FARMINGTON — A warrant has been issued for a Lewiston man wanted in connection with the attempted theft of more than $1,700 worth of merchandise from Walmart on Monday afternoon.

The incident was similar to recent ones at Walmarts in Auburn and Oxford involving a man of similar description and wearing an identical hat, Farmington police officer Wayne Drake said.

Police have a name and phone number for the suspect in Monday's theft attempt from a witness who recognized him. When police called the number, the person who answered hung up, he said.

A warrant has been issued for the man, who has been permanently barred from Kohl's department store in Auburn, police said.

On Monday, a man maneuvered through an empty checkout aisle at Walmart and waited until he thought no one was watching before pushing the cart loaded with merchandise through the doors, Drake said.

But, the store's loss prevention security officer was watching and had tracked him through the store, Drake said. He was confronted after he went through the doors and bolted, leaving the cart as he ran toward Burger King.

Because Farmington officers were on other calls, Wilton officers responded along with a tracking dog and officer from the Franklin County Sheriff's Department. The man apparently left the parking lot in a vehicle, but another shopper noticed the commotion and was able to identify him as a person from the Lewiston area and also supplied a phone number, Drake said.

The shoplifter had a vacuum cleaner, tools, wine, energy drinks, toys and other items in the cart. Some of it was hidden within a tote box, police said.

Walmart security personnel recorded the episode. They are watching and people will be caught, Drake advised.

Shoplifter

Is there a Law on the books in Maine for shoplifting ? It sounds like to me that it is OK ? If a shoplifter gets away with it someone has to pay. I don't like shopping at WALMART but if that same shoplifter is in SHAW'S doing the same thing is that shoplifting ? It is a law in most STATES ,,,,,,,, YA I know that Maine does have a law on the books so if it is Walmart or Shaw's it's SHOPLIFTING ...............................

Walmart apologists

... deliberately putting words in the mouths of others to make their point.
Well, gee, maybe you didn't have a point in the first place (to have to over reach like that).
But, since you brought it up ... -I can't think of a better place to pull a "Robin Hood" upon than Walmart.

Wal-Mart creates Jobs!!! For every 100 jobs they force overseas they hire 1 here so Wal-Mart creates jobs Right???

fatandhappy's picture

fixit, do you have a source for these figures?

I would like to see the source for your statement.

Walmart employs 550 people at the Auburn store. That makes it a major employer in our area.

And, what is driving US companies overseas or into bankruptcy, is the unions. Since 2004, Ford, GM and Chrysler have closed 22 plants, and GM and Chrysler are scheduled to close 16 more this year because of their bankruptcies. The UAW is driving them out of business. This year the average UAW worker makes $40/hr in wages, $15/hour in insurance benefits, and $15/hr in pension benefits. That is a total of $70/hr. No company can stay in business in this economy when they are forced to pay those kind of wages. In 1979 there were 1.5 million active working UAW members in the US. Today there are 390,000. The UAW put these people out of work, and forced the automakers to close plants and move a large part of their operation to other countries. Ask those out of work autoworkers in Detroit what they think of the union now.

Unions have forced the price of many general merchandise goods out of reach for most Americans. Walmart sells what people can afford to buy. If the US companies were free of the union control then they could produce goods at a price that would compete with the Asian companies.

People complain about the low wages at Walmart. Look, cashiers, stockers, sales associates, etc are all non-skilled employees. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to do these jobs, and it doesn't require any special education or experience. Do you think they deserve $20/hr just for showing up? Do you think Hannaford's, Shaw's, The Big Apple, or any of the stores in the mall pay more than Walmart? If they do then it's minimal.

The animosity against is just typical liberal dislike and jealousy of any company, or any person that is successful.

Are you not capable of having a civil discussion without calling someone a "liar" or telling them to "shove it"?

Your anger and aggression needs to be addressed by a professional, because it's not normal to be this upset and hateful towards someone you don't even know.

I don't agree with your views, but I am not going to personally attack you because of it.

Get some help please!

Hippo-crite

Pardon the pun, fat and happy but check yourself in the mirror(s) with the broad swipes you took at "everyone" who disagreed/disliked Walmart. So, now you're all blubbering when it's reversed. "Boo hoo"
To my credit, I targeted 1 for what 1 said ... -I didn't go making generalizations, insults and falsehoods about "everyone".
All this "get help please" crap, defensive much? It also points directly at how disingenuous you are.
I know, why don't you "pray for(me)" while you're at it -that'll make you feel a lot better about being wrong.

fatandhappy's picture

I do apologize for "get some help"

But I made no "broad swipe" except to say that liberals generally don't like companies or people that are more successful than they are. And I certainly made no swipe at you personally. Since liberals always want to raise taxes on corporations and wealthy businessmen, and they generally treat them as their social/economic enemies, I feel that my statement is correct. Liberals want to close Walmart down because of it's success.

And, I didn't call liberals "liars" or tell them to "shove it" or call them "hippo-crite". The tone of my post was nowhere near the hate and animosity that you posted.

And, I prayed for you even before you asked me to.

Rock Lobster's picture

"Deliberate Distorter of the Truth" ...

-does that sit gentler with you?
You did not say "liberals generally ... (blah blah blah)" , you said " the animosity against ... is just liberal dislike and jealousy of any company, or any person that is successful".
So, the descriptive label of "liar" still applies. If you do not like the label, then stop your behavior from matching the definition.
I wasn't taking exception for liberals ...-I take exception that you lumped everyone against Walmart as "liberals".
That was a lie on your part.
The liberals themselves might have a beef with what you further said about them and generalizing that they were all "just jealous" and "jealous of any person who is successful".
That sounds like yet another set of lies spewing from you.
I didn't read anyone else say these things, so I responded directly to you about what you said. Dry your eye and smarten up.
Do you really think anyone believes that you already "prayed"for me? Or is it more to the truth that you use the Bible as a self-imperious expression of not-so veiled animosity (ex: "as a weapon")?
You phony, you.

fatandhappy's picture

Please forgive me

I don't understand what I did to make you hate me so much that you would attack me like this. I certainly don't hate you, nor do i have anything against you.

Whatever it was i apologize for it.

Please forgive me
