CARRABASSETT VALLEY — A Massachusetts man is accused of head butting a police officer after tipping over snow-making guns at Sugarloaf early Friday morning.
Police said Kyle Smith, 22, of Byfield, Mass., was arrested on charges of assaulting an officer and failure to submit to arrest.
Smith's friends had reported him missing at about 11 p.m. Thursday, police Chief Scott Nichols said. At about 2 a.m. Friday, a snow-making crew found Smith tipping over active snow guns on the Birches, a beginner ski trail near the base lodge, Nichols said.
The crew had tried to shoo off a clearly intoxicated Smith, police officer Reid Bond said, but when Smith continued to menace them, they called police.
When Bond and fellow officer Keith Barton arrived, Smith threatened to assault them, charged toward them and head butted Bond in the face, the chief said. Bond said Smith's head hit the bridge of his nose but did not cause serious injury.
"He had been roaming around on the trail tampering with equipment," Bond said. "He had on a coat and pants and was wearing sneakers," which were all soaking wet, and his hair was caked with ice and snow.
Resort spokesman Ethan Austin said overnight temperatures at the resort were in the single numbers.
Smith was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington and released on $500 cash bail. He is to appear in a Farmington court March 24.
There was no damage to the snow-making equipment, police said.

Alcohol, for the most part, merely magnifies what temperment you have.
