Gas leak closes road

OXFORD – An early morning gas leak at Keiser Industries Inc. briefly shut down Route 121 on Monday.

Dave Cuttler, president of the company, said an employee was mowing the lawn around 6:30 a.m. and sheared off a relief valve for a propane tank. Steve Miller, chief financial officer, said the tank is used for heating purposes.

Cuttler said there were about 160 employees on the site at the time of the incident, and they were evacuated to the front of the building.

“Everyone here is trained on safety procedures,” he said.

Fire and police personnel from Oxford responded to Keiser Industries, and firefighters shut off the flow of gas.

Jim Richardson of the Oxford Police Department said Route 121, also known as Mechanic Falls Road, was shut down and traffic diverted down Route 26 until 8 a.m.

“They just had to turn one valve and it was done,” said Cuttler.

He said the AmeriGas propane company was on the scene to repair the damage after the incident.

Keiser Industries manufactures custom modular homes, according to its Web site.
