BRUNSWICK — Gene A. “Bumpy” Pender, 70, resident of 52 Larry Ave., Lisbon, passed from this earth unexpectedly on Oct. 26, in Brunswick, from diabetes and heart disease.

He was born on May 31, 1940, to Dolly DeRouin in Pawtucket, R.I. He married Dorothy Ferguson of Providence, R.I. Gene was educated in Pawtucket, R.I. He graduated from high school and joined the Marine Corps at age 17. Upon leaving the service, Gene traveled the country in search of adventure and himself. His work experience is extensive. Gene did everything from driving tractor trailers to catering; from painting to working in the VIP warehouse.

Gene was always looking for adventure. He was a rough and straight forward man who could be angry at you one minute and would be helping you the next minute. Maine has certainly lost a colorful character.

He will be sadly missed by his family, especially his great-grandson, David Evans, with whom he lived. He also sadly left his stepdaughter, Nancy James of Providence, R.I.; his stepson, Tom and his wife, Debbie, of Rumford, and grandchildren, Christopher, Robert, Justin Sparks, Lyndsy Jones and Wendy Sparks of Auburn; stepson, Kenneth and his wife, Diane, of Sabattus with grandchildren, Stephen and Aaron Sparks; stepson, Donald Sparks and his stepson, Christopher Martin; and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy Pender; and his grandson, Keith Sanders.

The family would like to extend our thanks to the countless people who interacted with Gene. The EMTs and the doctors from Parkview Hospital and the nurses, especially Bob and Michelle.

The family would also like to thank Bumpy’s friend, Rick for helping him in his hour of need. Without Rick’s help this tragedy could have been far worse. Thank you, Rick.
