Getchell delivers 600th career strikeout


FREEPORT — Pitcher Laura Getchell delivered her 600th career strikeout, sitting down 11 batters and steering Gray-New Gloucester to a 12-1 victory over Freeport in a softball game Monday.

The Patriots opened up on the Falcons in the first inning, scoring four runs and eventually knocking out 17 hits. G-NG did not make an error. The Patriots added another five runs in the fourth and took a 9-0 lead.

For the Patriots, Kassie Wilson belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Abby Ryan slapped a pair of triples and went 4-for-5 at the plate. Maggie Chaplin had a two-run triple in the first inning and went 3-for-3 for the afternoon. Damon Taylor smacked three singles and Natalie Tombarelli went 3-for-4.

Jay 4, St. Dom’s 3

AUBURN — Eliza Gemilli drove in the game-winning run in the fifth inning as Jay rallied twice to defeat St. Dom’s, 4-3, in their MVC season-opener Monday.

Gemilli had two hits and Paula Despres added a pair of hits and an RBI for the Tigers. Becky Trytek had two hits and three RBIs and Amanda Turcotte chipped in with a pair of singles for the Saints.

Despres scattered six hits and one walk while fanning five to earn the win on the mound for the Tigers. Hannah Sterling struck out three and walked two while yielding nine hits for the Saints.

Brewer 5, Mt. Blue 0

BREWER — Brewer capitalized on Mt. Blue’s six errors and used only three hits to defeat the Cougars with a 5-0 victory in a softball game Monday.

The Witches’ Amy Curry had a triple and Hannah Allen had two hits for the Cougars. Pitcher Amanda Ryan got the win on the mound, striking out 12 batters.

Fryeburg 4, York 1

FRYEBURG — Maddie Pearson belted a two-run double in the sixth inning to lift Fryeburg to a 4-1 victory over York in a WMC softball tilt Monday.

Charlotte Lewis struck out seven and scattered three hits on the hill for Fryebug (2-0) to notch the win. Lewis was also effective at the plate with two hits and one RBI.

Chelsea Hutchins smashed a home run for York (1-1) to prevent the shutout.

Brunswick 13, Lewiston 2

LEWISTON — The Brunswick baseball squad erupted for eight runs in the second inning and raced away to a 13-2 victory over Lewiston in KVAC action Monday. 

Rachel Oliver, Rachel Bryant and Tori Oliver combined for seven hits and six RBIs to lead the Dragons’ big rally. Laura Blier gave up nine hits in seven innings to record the win.

The Blue Devils (0-3) were paced by Kailey Martin with three hits, while Katie Dumais was tagged with the loss.

Oak Hill 15, Waterville 3

WALES — Lauren Hall went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs to propel Oak Hill to a 15-3 rout over Waterville in softball action Monday.

The Raiders rallied for eight runs in the second inning and improved on a 10-2 lead with five runs in the home half of the sixth inning to invoke the 12-run mercy rule. Taylor Finn and Katie Wood contributed two hits each.

Stacie Dixon took the loss for the Panthers.

Dirigo 21, Wiscasset 0

WISCASSET — Kyme Dolloff pitched  a one-hit shutout over five innings and struck out four as Dirigo plundered Wiscasset 21-0 in softball action Monday.

Katrina Pulk contributed three hits for the Cougars (1-0), while Gretchen Bradbury came up with three hits and five RBIs in the winning effort.

Paige Teel recorded the only Redskins’ (0-2) hit.


Oxford Hills 8, Edward Little 5

PARIS — Ebony Mills netted three goals, including two in the second half, as Oxford Hills came from behind to upend Edward Little 8-5 in KVAC girls’ lacrosse action Monday.

Marisa Hanning and Heather Knights added a pair each for the Vikings (1-1), and Abby Smith added the eighth. Mariah Kimball stopped 10 to earn the win in net.

Five different Edward Little players — Shelbea Russell, Katie Williamson, Kate Sawyer, Sadie Voisine and Gabby Lapierre — scored a goal, and Lapierre added an assist for the Eddies (0-2). Amanda Williams turned back 11 of the 19 shots she faced in the loss.

Lewiston 18, Lincoln Academy 15

NEWCASTLE — Kristen Lacasse and Megan Pelletier each scored four goals as Lewiston shook off Lincoln Academy with an 18-15 victory in a girls’ lacrosse game Monday.

The Blue Devils (1-1) took a 13-7 lead at halftime. Lewiston’s Christine Belanger and Sava Naji each turned in a hat trick and Kirstin McCoombs scored two goals. Lauren Lessard and Kelsey Dumond rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.

For the Eagles (0-2), Molly Stackhouse led her team’s scoring with five goals, with Katrina Belle adding another four. Charllette Nut scored three goals.
