NEW YORK – Just a few hours after Giants GM Ernie Accorsi warned everyone not to believe the LaVar Arrington “hysteria,” negotiations between the Giants and the free-agent linebacker finally heated up.
In fact, Carl Poston, one of Arrington’s agents, told the New York Daily News on Friday night that six weeks after Arrington made his first free-agent visit to the Giants, the two sides finally were inching toward a deal.
“The talks are still heated, and obviously when you continue to talk there’s a possibility,” Poston said. “But in this business you don’t know if you’re on the 5-yard line or the 50. One play could put you in the end zone.”
Poston also said that he’s still talking to the Packers, Jaguars and Dolphins about Arrington, though he added that negotiations with Jacksonville and Miami “have kind of fallen off.” He said Arrington has no timetable for making a decision, but indicated something could happen soon.
“It could be (Saturday), it could be next week,” Poston said. “It’s all up to him.”
Bears sign Carolina CB Manning to offer sheet
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – The Chicago Bears signed restricted free-agent defensive back Ricky Manning Jr. to an offer sheet Friday, with his agent saying the deal is worth up to $21 million over five years.
The deal includes about $7.5 million in guaranteed money in the first year of the contract, agent Jim Ivler said.
