LEWISTON – The Lisa Giguere Scholarship Committee is accepting applications from 2007 graduating seniors at Lewiston High School, Edward Little High School and St. Dominic Regional High School who have an interest in journalism.

The scholarship is in its third year and awards up to $2,500 annually to seniors who complete the required application package and meet the following criteria:

• be a graduating senior in good standing and attending a postsecondary school in the fall of 2006;

• write a 500-word, double-spaced essay demonstrating a desire and conviction to further a career in writing; and

• provide letters of recommendation and most recent high school transcript.

Supporting documentation such as school papers or other writing samples should be included with the package.

Lisa Giguere was a dedicated journalist with the Sun Journal for 30 years. The award was created by Giguere’s husband, Ralph Tuttle of Auburn, in partnership with the Costello family, publishers of the Sun Journal.

In the spirit of Giguere’s quest for the truth and thirst to learn, the scholarship was designed to identify promising, questioning, young journalists and help them develop their talent.

Applications may be obtained at the high schools, the Sun Journal offices at 104 Park St., or on the Web at: www.sunjournal.com/pdfs/scholarshipforms06.pdf

Completed packets are due in the applicant’s high school guidance department by May 1. Scholarships will be presented to recipients at a ceremony at the Sun Journal.

The winner or winners will be notified and a formal presentation made.

The scholarship fund is supported by private donations. Contributions are tax deductible and may be made to the Lisa Giguere Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400.
