BUCKFIELD — Nine Lakers scored as Rangeley defeated Buckfield 68-12 in an East-West Conference girls’ basketball game Friday.

“I’m playing 11 kids and I hope that come February that’s going to be a key for us for our bench to be that deep,” Rangeley coach Heidi Deery said. “That’s the plan.”

Natasha Haley paced the Lakers’ scoring attack with 13 points. Lauren Eastlack added 12, including 10 in the second half, and Brooke Egan finished with 10.

Deery said the Lakers have a new offense, and uptempo style that gives each player a green light to shoot and isn’t focused on feeding the ball to one player.

The players enjoy the new offense, Deery said, but they’re still adjusting.

“We are trying to push the ball,” Deery said. “I think in the second half we had more success doing that. The first half, we were doing it, but we were not taking shots that we wanted. We weren’t being selective enough.

Deery added: “With that (new offense) comes some discipline that we might be lacking right now offensively.”

That being said, Rangeley built a 20-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, and led 35-8 at halftime.

“The first half, I thought against their press we did OK,” Buckfield coach Ryan Wilkins said. “But then as the game started to get away from us, we started to get a little unfocused and lose our composure a little bit. With a lot of young kids, sometimes that happens. But, like I told them, until we get sick and tired of having that happen to us, it’s probably going to continue happening to us.”

Thea Quick led Buckfield with five points, and Katy Henderson scored four points off the bench.
