Gloria E. Obie

AUBURN – Gloria E. Obie, 75, of 10 Oak Street, Lewiston passed away Thursday, May 4, at the Hospice House in Auburn with her family at her side.

She was born in Malden, Mass., on Dec. 27, 1930. She was the daughter of Sebastian and Maria (Freiles) Pirro. Gloria grew up in Massachusetts and was educated in Malden, and graduated from Malden High School in 1948.

Gloria loved the arts. For many years, she was a member of the Quanapowitt Players theatrical group in Reading, Mass.

On March 29, 1980, she married Raymond J. Obie, and they resided thereafter in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Gloria worked for many years at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Catholic charities and the Lewiston Senior Citizens.

Gloria was an outgoing person who always gave to others before thinking of herself. If someone was ill, she was there with a hot bowl of soup and a warm heart. Her selflessness and constant desire to take care of others in need, along with her devotion to family and spirituality, made her an inspiration for everyone she touched with her kindness and caring heart, and her spirit of giving.

She volunteered to teach illiterate children how to read, and also helped raised money at the local PBS television station.

Some say she should have been a pastry chef.

Her sweetness came not only in her wonderful personality, but with the diligence she committed in making others happy and helping those in dire need.

She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond; her sons Kevin and Brian, and daughter, Marlane. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Gloria was the last of four sisters, Civita, Claudia, and Valeria.
