The season isn’t quite over yet for Edward Little hockey captain Mat Gordon.

The senior, who’s just about ready to start playing baseball for the Red Eddies, learned this week that he is a finalist for the most prestigious  award in Maine high school hockey, the Travis Roy Award, given annually to the best all-around senior in Class A.

A four year varsity letter-winner and captain of this year’s resurgent EL squad that won 14 games after finishing with just three last season, Gordon led Eastern Class in scoring with 48 points. Gordon recorded 125 points over his four-year career and is a two-time All-State selection.

A member of the National Honor Society, Gordon volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Auburn Learn to Skate program.

Gordon joins three other players — one more the Eastern A and two from Western A — as finalists. Thornton Academy goalie Rick Hebb, Biddeford captain and the state’s leading scorer Trevor Fleurent and Bangor defenseman Nick George are also finalists.

Hebb finished this season with a 1.36 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage. He has recorded 18 career shutouts and has 44 career wins. An honor roll student, he volunteers as a goalie mentor with Biddeford Area Youth Hockey.

Fleurent netted 28 goals and added 23 assists for 51 points to lead all Tier I Maine players, and led his team to the Class A title, the team’s third in four years. He has recorded 141 points in his career at Biddeford, is a three time All-State selection and he volunteers with Biddeford Youth Hockey and Habitat for Humanity.

The lone defenseman among this year’s semifinalists, George led the Rams in scoring. A first team All-State selection each of the past two seasons, George was also named the Class A Soccer Player of the Year in 2009. An honor roll student and National Honor Society member, George has volunteered at EMMC in patient assistance.

The Travis Roy Award winner will be announced at the Class A state banquet at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston at noon Sunday, March 14th.

In addition to the Roy Award, the coaches will unveil this year’s All-State teams, along with the Bob Boucher Coach of the Year award and team sportsmanship award.

One day earlier, the Class A Hockey Coaches Association will hold its annual East-West Senior All Star game, which will be played at 6:30pm on Saturday, March 13th, at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth.
