Grand jury indicts ex-firefighter on sex charges

FARMINGTON – A former SAD 9 firefighting instructor was indicted Monday on charges of gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact and furnishing alcohol to a minor – a girl under 18.

John “Jack” T. Berry, 51, of Fayette was charged in February with gross sexual assault in Township D in Franklin County between Nov. 26 and Dec. 5, 2005.

The Franklin County grand jury indicted him on one count each of the sex charges and two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Berry pleaded not guilty in March to misdemeanor charges of unlawful sexual contact and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Berry, a retired firefighter who worked in Auburn and other towns, resigned his job as a firefighting instructor at the Foster Regional Applied Technology Center in Farmington a few days after he was charged. He had been on staff through a grant program. This was the first school year he was on the payroll of the SAD 9 system.
