Great Maine Outdoor Weekend events coming in Oxford Hills


PARIS — The 11th Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. The weekend is an annual collaborative event featuring outdoor active programs offered by a variety of agencies and organizations throughout the state.

Promoted by the Maine Outdoor Coalition, the goal of the weekend is to connect friends and neighbors with the natural world, to promote fun, physical activity and good health.

In the Oxford Hills, the Western Foothills Land Trust is sponsoring a variety of opportunities to be outside and active at some of the area’s special places. Offerings will include a woods walk in Buckfield, a sunset hike up Hawk Mountain in Waterford, an opportunity to run with a dog in a cani-cross at Roberts Farm, a hike up Noyes Mountain in Greenwood, geocaching Buckfield and mountain biking at Shepard’s Farm in Norway.

All programs are free; donations welcome.

The schedule is as follows:

Packard Trail Story Walk: Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Learn the story of Daniel Packard on a two-mile trail walk in the Virgil Parris Forest, Buckfield. Trailhead 1.2-mi. south of 117 on Sodom Road.


Sunset on Hawk Mountain: Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Moderate incline walk with panoramic view, possible to spot hawks migrating. Trail head on Hawk Mountain Road, 7/10 mi. south of Mill Hill Road, Waterford. Weather permitting.

Canine-Cross Fun: Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. 2k or 5k event for fit canines and owners. Run with harness. $10 entry. Roberts Farm Preserve, 64 Roberts Road, Norway.

Hike to historic Harvard Mine: Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Strenuous 2.4-mi. round-trip. Noyes Mountain Preserve, 172 Richardson Hollow Road, Greenwood.

Geocaching Packard Trail, Virgil Parris Forest: Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. Learn about geocaching while hiking the 2-mile Packard Trail. Bring smartphone or a GPS device. Trailhead 1.2 mi. south of 117 on Sodom Road, Buckfield.

Witt’s End Mountain Bike Ride: Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Explore beginner and intermediate level mountain bike trails at Shepard’s Farm Preserve, 121 Crockett Ridge Road, Norway. BYO bike.
