TURNER — Beginning in September, Greene and Turner will join Leeds in offering prekindergarten programming to SAD 52 children who will reach the age of 4 by Oct. 15.
Students will attend two days each week in the community where they reside. Transportation will be provided. Federal stimulus money will pay for the program during its first year, with the district assuming costs in subsequent years.
Education officials are calling the program expansion a “win-win decision that reflects an ongoing commitment to increased learning for all,” according to a statement released Friday. It cited the significant long-term social, educational and economic benefits that result from early intervention, and the fact that increased enrollment will positively impact future state subsidy.
A community forum about the prekindergarten program has been scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 24 at Turner Primary School. Residents from Greene, Leeds and Turner are invited to attend. An overview of the program will be presented, and district administration will be on hand to answer questions.
Open registration for the program will be held from May 24 to June 4. Registration materials will be available at the forum. Parents may also elect to pick up the registration form at the school beginning on May 25 and return it to the school on or before June 4.
