WINTHROP — Greta Rhodenizer Gordon, 90, of Winthrop, died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center.
She was born in Parkdale, Nova Scotia, May 22, 1922, the daughter of Laurin and Lena (Wagner) Rhodenizer.
She came to the United States at a very early age and grew up in Livermore Falls, graduating from Livermore Falls High School in 1939. She went on to graduate from the Farmington Normal School and began her career as an elementary school teacher.
She taught in Livermore Falls and Dixfield until 1949, when she took time off to have her family. She returned to teaching in 1964 and taught in Winthrop until the mid-1970s.
She was married to Asa Gordon for over 64 years, until his death in 2009. Greta was proud of her Canadian heritage and remained a Canadian citizen.
Greta was a member of the Winthrop United Methodist Church for many years and taught Sunday school there. She enjoyed knitting and cooking and was a den mother for several years. She also enjoyed spending time in nature and loved her pets.
She is survived by her sons, Laurin Gordon and his wife, Marie, of Hallowell, and Bill Gordon and his husband, Richard T. Rossiter, of Mundelein, Ill.; her daughters, Marilyn Gordon and her husband, Hashem Qweider, of Augusta, and Judy Jewell and her husband, Brian, of Winthrop; her brother, Richard Rhodenizer and his wife, Velma, of Scotia, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Alec Knight of Moultonboro, N.H.; 15 grandchildren, Kathryn Duffy and her husband, Tim, Leah Huri and her husband, Thom, Matthew Gordon and his wife, Elizabeth, Ian Mortimer and his wife, Libby, Adam Courtney and his wife, Ness, Aaron Gordon and his wife, Christina Karin Gordon, Andrew Gordon and his fiancee, Chelsea Hunt, Jonathan Mortimer, Amy Courtney, Megan Gordon, Timothy Gordon, Sarah Gordon, Ben Jewell and Nathan Jewall; eight great-grandchildren, Kiernan Duffy, Olivia and Graham Huri, Evelyn and Jackson Mortimer, Makayla and A.J. Gordon, and Amber Gordon.
