Groundbreaking held for Portland Jetport expansion

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — State and federal officials will be on hand for the formal groundbreaking of an expansion at the Portland International Jetport.

The $75 million expansion will nearly double the size of the passenger terminal and add three gates, allowing the jetport to meet existing demand and to attract new service.

It’ll also include additional passenger screening lanes, new baggage-handling and explosive-detection systems and a sky bridge from the parking garage.

Work already has been under way before Tuesday’s formal groundbreaking, and the project is due to be completed by January 2012.
