Guitar champ will play at Skye Theatre


CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will host North Carolina guitar champion Steve Kilby with his wife, Penny, Tuesday July 10, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., with a preshow jam session starting at 6:30 p.m.

Kilby started playing guitar as a youngster to back up his fiddling grandfather at square dances and house parties in Wilkes County, N.C. Over the past 30 years, he has won numerous ribbons, including six championships at Fiddlers’ Grove and two first-place ribbons at the famous Galax, VA Fiddlers’ Convention.

Kilby’s specialty is flat-picking such guitar tunes as “Black Mountain Rag,” “Alabama Jubilee” and “Sweet Georgia Brown.” In 1979, he was named North Carolina state guitar champion.

Penny will provide rhythm accompaniment.
