Last Tuesday, I voted “yes” by absentee ballot on local Question 2 to make small amounts of marijuana legal for adults. This initiative would remove the penalties for adults ages 21 and over for possessing one ounce or less of marijuana in private.
Using marijuana in public will still be illegal, so people are not going to see others walking down the street smoking a joint.
Marijuana prohibition has done nothing to make communities any safer, and it is time for a new approach. Given that marijuana is objectively safer than alcohol, there is no reason to punish adults who would prefer to use the safer substance. Law enforcement in Lewiston should be free to go after more serious crimes.
Lewiston has the opportunity to move forward before the rest of Maine does, and I hope Lewiston voters take it.
