H. Weber: Making the winter lakes safer

I was thinking about those snowmobilers who went through the ice in Rangeley. The wardens have planes to look for lost people and to spot forest fires, so why not have them do fly-overs on popular lakes to spot open water?

They could drop a harmless red or yellow dye nearby to warn people not to go there. Or radio wardens on the ground to let them know where open places are so they could go out (with proper safety gear) and place red cones or some such?

Another thing to be considered is to pass a law so there could be no snowmobiling on lakes after dark. Those who go out after dark would have to pay for any rescue efforts if they got into trouble.
