Hazardous waste collection set for June

MEXICO – A household hazardous waste collection day is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 3, in the parking lot of Region 9, 377 River Road.

The event is open to residents of Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Canton, Roxbury, Byron, Hanover and Andover. Other towns may participate, but there would be a disposal fee for materials brought to the collection.

Household hazardous waste is anything labeled caution, warning, (less toxic) danger, poison, toci, flammable or corrosive (most toxic). They include products such as aerosol cans, paint brush cleaners/solvents, varnish remover, chemical lawn fertilizers, solvent based glues, weed or insect killer, cleaners (toilet, oven or drain), swimming pool chemicals, antifreeze (radiator/windshield), barbecue and camping fuel, rat poison, gasoline, moth balls, driveway sealer.

Store materials in the original container and label clearly. Never mix chemicals and make sure the containers do not leak. Pack items securely in a sturdy box for transporting to the collection site.

Latex paint will not be accepted. For small amounts of latex paint (one inch or less) dry it out and discard the can. Dry out latex paint by opening the can and letting the liquid evaporate outdoors, away from children and pets. Dispose of the paint can (with the lid off) in the garbage. Larger amounts of latex paint can be hardened by adding cat litter to the can.

The collection will replace the annual event scheduled in the fall. For more information and to register, contact the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition at 364-7408 or e-mail [email protected]
