RUMFORD — Organizers of the River Valley Fourth of July celebration are asking for volunteers to help make it a success.

Dan Richard, chairman of the Rumford Parks Commission and member of the Fourth of July Committee, said, “Everyone sits home and says ‘my neighbor will step up.’ Well, your neighbor is thinking the same thing. Some people say, ‘Well, it’s the Fourth of July.’ Well, it’s Fourth of July for me, too.”

He said volunteers don’t have to be there all day Wednesday. “If they could give an hour or two, that would be perfect,” he said.

The celebration will include a fireworks show at dusk by Central Maine Pyrotechnics of Hallowell.

Gates in the Hosmer Field Complex will open at 3:30 p.m. A new event, a weightlifting contest organized by Gary Dolloff, will begin at 3:30 p.m. by the snack shack. It will be judged by Rumford powerlifting legend Richard Austin.

Musical performances are: Andy St. Pierre from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; JT & Kitty from 4:45 to 6 p.m.; Tom LeClair from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.; and The Rubberband Band from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Committee member April McLean said children will be entertained by two bounce houses, with an obstacle course from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

“You buy a wristband for $5 for unlimited bounce as well as three of the kids’ games. But you can still buy more tickets (two for $1) if you want to play more games,” she said.

Other events include the baby carriage/wagon parade for those up to third grade at 5 p.m., a bike parade for those up to eighth grade at 5:30 p.m., a dunk tank, a face painter and a vendor providing children’s games.
