‘Her Heart’: CMHVI event to discuss heart disease in women

AUBURN — One of Maine’s most respected cardiac surgeons will be the keynote speaker at a Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute special event set for Feb. 12.

Paul W. Weldner, M.D., a cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in minimally-invasive heart valve surgery and repair, will discuss heart valvular disease in women at “Her Heart,” a luncheon at Hilton Garden Inn.

Weldner will present facts about how heart disease affects women, dispel a few commonly held misconceptions about the disease and provide information about cardiac disease symptoms. His presentation will focus on heart valve disease, as well as the latest news and research about preventing and treating the problem.

Weldner recently joined the Central Maine Medical Center-CMHVI medical staff after practicing in Portland for more than 18 years.

The recipient of the Her Heart Award will be announced during this event. Nominees were selected for outstanding community service and for the respect and esteem in which their colleagues hold them. This recognition is accorded those who exemplify in their daily lives ideals and commitment to serving the community that make our area a better place to live for all.

This first-time special event is being presented by CMHVI as part of a yearlong celebration of its 10th anniversary.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with free health screenings offered in an information fair setting. Weldner will begin his presentation at 12:30 p.m.

Cost for the event is $20. Proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Associations Central Maine Heart Walk, which is held each September. The fee is payable in cash or check at the event, which includes a heart-healthy salad buffet lunch.

Anyone expecting to attend the event is urged to register in advance by visiting www.cmmc.org, clicking on Events and Classes, and completing the registration form. Individuals or groups can also register by calling 795-8448.
