Herman C. Lord


AUBURN – Herman C. “Herm” Lord, 68, a resident of Auburn, died Sunday, April 9, with his wife and son by his side, after a long and courageous 20-month struggle with complications from a pituitary gland tumor..

He was born in Hallowell in 1937, the son of Maurice and Lorraine (Heald) Lord. He graduated from Lisbon High School in 1955, and then attended the University of Maine, Orono, before graduating from Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Mass., in 1963.

He loved birding, gardening and woodworking. He was a member of the Auburn Seventh-day Adventist Church and sat on the church board for many years.

He also sat on the board of Pine Tree Academy in Freeport for 22 years, several of which he served as chairnan. One of his joys as chainnan was signing his son’s graduation diploma. He loved his Heavenly Father and his family very much and looked forward to meeting his Lord and Saviour at the Second Coming.

He taught math and computer science at Edward Little High School for 35 years and also at the University of Maine, Lewiston-Auburn and what is now Central Maine Community College. He was chairman of the math department at E.L.H.S. for many years and then became the head of computer services for the Auburn School System, until his retirement in 1998.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia, whom he married on June 29, 1960; his only child, son, Michael, of whom he was so proud; brothers, Philip and wife, Carolyn, of Texas and Robert and wife, Nancy, of Brunswick; and by sisters, Caroline Christensen of Massachusetts and Elizabeth Rankin of Topsham; his mother-in-law, Arlie Thurston of Auburn; his stepmother, Vesta, also of Auburn; an uncle; an aunt; many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Shirley Baxter of Lisbon in 1992; and father-in-law, Ernest in 1997.
