High-octane Genticorum to start collaboration with Skye Theatre and Acoustic Artisans

Skye Theatre, the long-time standard bearer of shared events, will team up with Acoustic Artisans in Portland to bring a number of Celtic and Acadian artists to the Portland area in 2014. Acoustic Artisans is fast becoming the place to hear top-level artists in a very intimate listening room.

The 594 Congress Street location now joins with several other venues in New England to provide sensible routing for touring and regional artists wishing to secure mid-week opportunities in the Northeast.

Phill McIntyre, director of New England Celtic Arts and founder of Crossroads International Celtic Festival has spent the last 10 years developing what he calls “Trad Routes.” Artists from Scotland, Ireland, Canada, France, and the U.S. are now appearing in the region on a weekly basis. Other groups in the series will be The Alan Kelly Gang (Ireland), Long Time Courting (NE), Ward MacDonald (PEI), Mia & Ari Friedman (Boston), Maeve Gillchrist and Nick Gareiss (Scotland & U.S.), and several others.

Over the past decade the trad Quebec group Genticorum (Pascal Gemme, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand and Yann Falquet) have become a fixture on the international world, trad, folk and Celtic music circuit.

The trio’s four albums met with critical acclaim in Canada, the U.S. and Great Britain, assuring the band a brilliant future. Known for its energy and its stage presence (and often mistaken for a larger ensemble), Genticorum has given more than 800 concerts in no fewer than 15 countries — and is showing no sign of slowing down.

Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, the energetic and original traditional “power trio” also incorporates the dynamism of today’s North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle and flute work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and guitar and bass accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Their distinctive sound, sense of humour and stage presence make them a supreme crowd pleaser.

Skye Theater is at 9 Highland Drive. Ticket price is $15 at both locations. Acoustic Artisans is at 594 Congress Street. For reservations at Acoustic Artisans, go to http://acousticartisans.com or call 207 671-6029. More information is available at www.necelticarts.com.
