16 bands begin battle for title of Best High School Band in Maine

PORTLAND — The battle for the title of best high school band in Maine resumes when the Maine Academy of Modern Music Rock Off begins on April 10 and 11 at Empire Dine & Dance.

Produced by the Maine Academy of Modern Music, in partnership with the Portland Music Foundation and MaineToday.com, the Rock Off pits 16 high school bands in two preliminary rounds on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 — all of whom hope to move on to the Rock Off finals to be held Saturday, May 1 at Port City Music Hall.

Sponsors for the event include Rokbird Flying Discs, AO Guitars, CIEE and Empire Dine & Dance.

In the first round, which kicks off at 12:40 p.m. on April 10 and noon on April 11, judges will evaluate all of the participants and choose five bands to move on to the finals. In addition, fans can go to www.MaineToday.com/rockoff/ and vote for their favorite band. The band with the most votes will serve as the sixth band to join the judges’ selections in the finals. Tickets for each preliminary show are $10 for students, $12 for adults; participating bands have unlimited $2-off vouchers to distribute.

Special guests Holy Boys Danger Club, hot off the release of their new EP “The Boo Box,” will play a set as judges make their selections on Sunday.
