High School Roundup: Buckfield splits with Vinalhaven



Cony 4, EL 3

AUGUSTA — Despite Logan Rossignol’s two-run double which highlighted a three-run rally in the sixth inning, Edward Little could not overtake Cony and was handed a 4-3 loss in a baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams (6-1) built a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning before the Red Eddies (3-5) made a run at Cony in the sixth inning.

The Red Eddies outhit the Rams, 9-4 and made only one error, but Cony hung onto its one-run lead for the rest of the game. EL’s James Jackson went 3-for-3 and Ryan Arnold also doubled.

Cony’s Luke Duncklee belted a pair of hits and scored two runs.

Buckfield, Vinalhaven split

BUCKFIELD — Isaac Smith struck out 16 batters, walked three batters and gave up just four hits as Buckfield (1-4) slipped away with a 3-1 victory in Game 1 of doubleheader against Vinalhaven (1-4) on Tuesday. But the Vikings rebounded quickly and dropped the Bucks, 9-4, in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Bucks used eight hits and Smith’s pitching to stifle the Vikings. Smith also doubled and Jarek Boyd belted a two-run double in the third inning to give Buckfield a 2-1 lead. Trevor Averill had two hits for the Bucks.

Vinalhaven catcher Steven Osgood doubled.

In Game 2, Vinalhaven opened up a the plate with 14 hits to repay the Bucks. Winning pitcher Steven Osgood held the Bucks to seven hits.

Vinalhaven took 6-3 lead after three innings. Osgood and teammate Nathan Hopkins each tripled for the Vikings.

For Buckfield, Alen Hedrick and Cody Barker doubled, and Austin Dolley had two hits.

Lisbon 6, Winthrop 2

WINTHROP — Frank Angelico went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI to lead Lisbon to a 6-2 triumph over Winthrop in baseball action Tuesday.

The Greyhounds (7-1) scored first with a run in the first innnig and were leading 2-1 when they picked up the tempo with four runs in the fifth. Alex Hall contributed two hits and an RBI.

The Ramblers (2-3) outhit Lisbon by a margin of 8-7, but allowed the game to slip away on five errors. Tyler Arsenault had two hits, while Tyler Sherman posted another pair, including a double.

Alex Hall remains undefeated with three pitching victories for Lisbon.

Boys’ lacrosse

St. Dom’s 19, Camden Hills 4

AUBURN — Brothers Trevar and Troy Haefele got together and scored a combined 11 goals and collected 10 assists as St. Dom’s rolled over Camden Hills with a lopsided 19-4 victory in a boys’ lacrosse game Tuesday.

The undeafeated Saints (6-0) had no problem building a 15-2 lead by halftime and topped off their victory with four more goals in the second half. Trevar Haefele turned a pair of hat tricks, and his brother, Troy, scored five goals.

St. Dom’s senior Justin Bureau scored his first career goal and teammates Anthony Fagone, Tim Day, and Matt Adams each scored a pair of goals. Chris Finlay scored once.

For Canden Hills (1-5), Max Mercier and Kyle Kaskmen each scored a pair of goals.

Lewiston 17, Cony 2

LEWISTON — Erik Tiner netted a game-high four goals as Lewiston cruised to a 17-2 rout over Cony in KVAC boys’ lacrosse action Tuesday.

The Blue Devils (7-3) put on a scoring clinic in the first half, netting seven goals in the first quarter and six in the second. Elliot Chicoine, Brandon Tiner and Ryan Lemelin booted three goals apiece. Curtis Robinson assisted on five of Lewiston’s goals.

Goalie James Fongemie made six saves for the Rams (0-6), while Jesse Leeman only had to repel two to earn the win in net for Lewiston.


Mountain Valley 10, Madison 8

RUMFORD — Winning pitcher Shelby Moore struck out seven batters and Hannah LaPointe had a pair of hits as Mountain Valley escaped with a 10-8 victory over Madison in a Mountain Valley Conference softball game Tuesday.

The Falcons (3-3) used seven hits and took advantage of Madison’s six errors to chalk up a win.

For the Bulldogs (3-4), Natalie Michaud and Emily Berry each had two hits.

Buckfield sweeps Vinalhaven

BUCKFIELD — Ashlee Hamann recorded a triple in the opener and a pair of hits in the nightcap to assist Buckfield in a pair of wins over Vinalhaven, 9-1 and 12-0, in softball action Tuesday.

Zoe Gillis and Melissa Taylor peppered three hits apiece for the Bucks (4-2) in the opener. Brittany Wiley fanned 11 batters over seven innings of work to earn her second win of the season.

The Vikings spoiled the shutout with a run in the third, and managed only one hit along the way.

Buckfield took advantage of Vinalhaven’s pitching difficulties in the nightcap. The Vikings gave up 12 walks, including five in the six-run third inning. Hamann and Danielle Patrie had two hits apiece.

Cony 4, Edward Little 3

AUGUSTA — Emily Soule plated Suzie Deeves for the evenutal game-winning run as Cony squeaked by with a 4-3 victory over Edward Little in KVAC softball action Tuesday.

The Red Eddies (5-3) tried to stage a come-from-behind victory in the sixth inning, but came up just a hair short. Emily Grund had a two-run single and Kirsten Prue scored on an error for Edward Little’s three runs.

The Rams (5-2) hit first with three runs in the first inning. In addition to plating the eventual game-winner, Soule pitched tough and held on for the mound win.

Mt. Ararat 5, Oxford Hills 3

SOUTH PARIS — Miranda Rienden and Kayla Pare knocked three hits  apiece to lead Mt. Ararat to a 5-3 win over Oxford Hills in KVAC softball action Tuesday.

Sarah Williams and Meghan Carr added two hits apiece in Mt. Ararat’s 17-hit attack. Rienden scattered eight Vikings hits to pick up the win for the Eagles (4-4). Brianna Martin led Oxford Hills (5-2) with three hits while Brooke Ladd added a pair of singles.
