Holy Trinity to celebrate Orthodox Easter holiday

LEWISTON – An Orthodox Christian Easter service will be held at midnight on Sunday, April 23, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. All are invited to come and witness the beautiful services and to pray and experience its depth and fulfillment.

Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox and the eight-day celebration of Passover, said the Rev. Ted Toppses. Passover, which commemorates the freedom and exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, began on April 13 this year.

The Eastern Orthodox Church, the second largest Christian denomination in the world, includes the Greek, Russian, Serbian, Albanian, Bulgarian, Syrian and other Orthodox churches. They use the ruling of the First Ecumenical Council in 325 AD to determine the date.

Locally, Holy Trinity serves a diverse Orthodox Christian Group from all ethnic and American backgrounds through its extensive use of English in its services.

Holy Week, the week preceding Easter, for Orthodox Christians is a profound journey of spiritual transformation marking the later part of Christ’s life through His death and resurrection.
