NORWAY — Christ Episcopal Church, 35 Paris St., will observe Holy Week and Easter in the following ways:
Maundy Thursday, April 1, 7 p.m.: the observation of Jesus’ Last Supper when he washed the disciples’ feet and celebrated the first Eucharist (Communion). As the service ends, the church will be darkened and the congregation will watch in silence as the decorations and other objects are taken away.
Good Friday, April 2, 7 p.m.: the reading of Jesus’ Passion from the Gospel of St. John. This is a quiet service, with special prayers and a focus on the Cross.
Saturday, April 3, 7:30 p.m.: The Great Vigil of Easter (the first service of Easter itself!). The service begins outdoors with the people of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church as the sacred new fire of hope is lit. Members then process into their own churches to continue with the reading by candlelight of stories from the Old Testament and ending with Jesus’ resurrection. They will celebrate Eucharist and end with cider and refreshments.
Easter Day, April 4, 8 a.m.: Eucharist is celebrated; 10 a.m.: Eucharist with special music, choir, bells and lilies.
