New England Celtic Arts will present Socks in the Frying Pan at One Longfellow Square in Portland at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, and at Bethel Celtic Concerts in Bethel at the Bethel United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Tickets are $15. Reservations are strongly suggested at both venues.
The band includes brothers Shane and Fiachra Hayes on accordion and fiddle/banjo and accompanied by Aodán Coyne on guitar and vocals. The band is a young traditional trio from County Clare that blends traditional Irish melodies with innovative rhythmic and melodic garnish. These socks are audibly palatable.
As for the inevitable question of where the name originated: This is yet to be disclosed. Having gained a fan base from four years of gigging around the west of Ireland, this exciting group has recently started branching out and has been well-received for its modern traditional style and energetic approach to music. This, combined with an acoustic musical interplay, three-part harmony and an obvious love of live performance, complements the traditional essence of both tune and songs in a fresh and entertaining way.
Socks’ new CD “Socks Monster” has been released to rave reviews. The CD itself offers over a dozen lovingly crafted tracks which the lads are eager to showcase both on the album and at their musically charged gigs.
“This is a great album by three extremely talented young artists. It has been a while since we have enjoyed a new group as much as this.” — Irish American News
The band won “New Group of the Year” award from Live Ireland Awards 2014 and “Best New Band” from Tradition in Review 2014.
