The real impact of the passage of a bill that effectively rewrites Maine medical insurance regulations (LD 1333) is largely unknown. Lengthy amendments to the controversial bill were added at the 11th hour so legislators would have had difficulty reading it, and certainly inadequate time to evaluate the effects of such sweeping measures.
The bill was passed by the Maine House of Representatives by a very narrow margin. However, the voice of the people was not silent, as demonstrated by a petition signed by more than 5,000 voters urging legislators to vote no. That petition was produced by the Maine People’s Alliance in less than two days.
As the bill approaches final hurdles, Republican legislators should be aware that they are walking into a rising tide that may envelop them.
